What Is Emotional Intelligence

How well do you understand your own emotions, and what about the emotions of the people around you. Do you have an idea of how emotions affect a person and play an impactful role when we talk with someone?

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is referred to as the capability of a person to understand and control his or her own emotions and possess the ability to understand and control the emotions of others as well. In other words, It is the ability to control own and others' emotions.

Someone describes it in this way, "Emotional intelligence is a shorthand that psychological researchers use to describe how well individuals can manage their own emotions and react to the emotions of others."

It is a very important skill in leadership because it teaches you how to identify or deal with your own emotions, or the emotions of others. These skills can be valuable, but you’ll never get them in a classroom. So you have to develop it on your own and for this, we have to talk with different types of people and try to understand their emotions.

Emotional Intelligence Has Five Main Elements

Self Awareness

It determines how aware you are about yourself, like your strengths, your weaknesses as well as your emotions. If you want to self-aware, then keep a notebook and write everyday about yourself, whenever you experience anger, joy or something special, hold that moment and think about what makes you so angry or happy. After a few days when you have free time and no one to disturb for 3-4 hours, start reviewing the diary and mark the things which made you happy or sad, and with their results. This will make you self aware.

Self Regulation

It determines how much control you have on your own emotions, it also teaches us to think before speaking. This involves being able to keep your emotions in check when they become disruptive and how to manage that situation. When you self regulated, then you knew how to smile in a bad situation and not break by facing a problem, but finding a way to overcome it.

Motivation

When you are motivated to do a series of tasks you would be in a better position to influence others and lead them. Work towards your goal continuously until you achieve it. Show your colleagues how the work is done, even if you face a challenge don't move back try to find a solution for that situation and achieve the goal. It doesn’t mean that every time you will be the winner, but you will be rewarded for your struggle and not giving up.

Empathy

Above three elements refers to a person's internal emotions, This one deals with the emotions of others. Empathy is the skill and practice of reading the emotions of others and responding appropriately. Every successful leader should know how to empathise with others if he wants to earn their respect.

Social Skills

This category involves the application of empathy. In other words, social skills are all about communicating your point of view, how you deal with people and keep your point of view in front of them. This is very or nearly the most important skills that a leader should have. When you know how to communicate with your customer, then you’re actually one step ahead of those who don’t know. One thing you should keep in mind about social skills,
It is something on that basis, people are going to make a perception about you, so don’t do anything that makes your image down in society.
